Nettoyer sa pellicule en 15 minutes

Un passage chronométré : captures, similaires et grosses vidéos avant les albums difficiles.

A timer beats a heroic weekend plan

You do not need a free Saturday to make Photos smaller. You need fifteen honest minutes and a fixed order of operations. The mistake most people make is starting with the emotional albums: “Japan 2019,” “Kids,” or the entire Recents grid from seven years ago. That is how sessions die at minute three.

This routine uses free iOS tools only. PhotoSwipe is coming soon for faster swipe passes; it is not required for today’s timer.

Before you start (one minute)

Charge the phone or plug it in. Open Settings → General → iPhone Storage and note free space and the Photos total. Write the numbers in Notes if you like proof later.

Decide you will not reorganize albums. The only goal is delete clear clutter. Favorites and memories can wait.

Set a 15-minute timer. When it rings, stop even if you feel momentum. Momentum is how you accidentally delete keepers while tired.

Minutes 0–5: screenshots

Open Photos → Albums → Media Types → Screenshots (or search “screenshot”). This album is dense trash for most people: codes, receipts you already filed, maps, memes, temporary tickets.

Tap Select. Multi-select from the oldest end if you can stand it, or from the newest if you remember what still matters. Delete boarding passes from last year without guilt. Keep warranties and rare documents if you truly have nowhere else to store them.

Do not read every screenshot. If you cannot name why you would open it again next month, it goes. Speed matters more than perfect archival judgment in a five-minute window.

  • Avoid opening each screenshot full screen unless it might be a password or legal doc.
  • Skip organizing into albums during the timer.
  • If the album is enormous, clear one visible screenful at a time until the five minutes end.

Minutes 5–10: similars and easy stills

Jump to Recents and pick a recent busy day: a party, a match, a short trip. Pinch the grid so near-duplicates show as runs of twins. Multi-select the duds; keep one hero per moment.

Target easy stills: blurry shots, black frames, accidental pocket photos, and duplicate plate-of-food angles. Leave hard sentimental calls for a longer session. Fifteen-minute mode is for obvious noes.

If you hit a day that is all precious and nothing is obvious, skip the day. Flip to another weekend. The timer is for density, not bravery.

Selfie stacks and food brackets count as similars here. Keep one sendable frame. Delete the half-blink and the darker plate. Do not open Messages to re-check which version you already shared; that burns the block.

Minutes 10–15: videos and heavy clips

Open Albums → Media Types → Videos. Sort by looking for long durations and screen recordings. Delete false starts, pocket videos, and clips you already shared and will never rewatch.

One good video delete can beat the entire screenshots pass on pure GB. Watch the timer; do not start editing and trimming unless a 30-second trim saves a keeper you would otherwise drop.

If you still have a minute, return to Recently Deleted only to scan for disasters, not necessarily to empty it yet.

Screen Recordings deserve a glance even if Videos is thin. Bug demos, app walkthroughs, and accidental lock-screen recordings often hide there with multi-minute runtimes and no emotional attachment.

What a good 15 minutes looks like

Success is not zero screenshots left. Success is a finished timer, a cleaner grid in one dense area, and proof in Settings that something moved (or a clear note that trash still holds the bytes). Typical first sessions free a few hundred MB to several GB depending on video luck.

Count decisions, not perfection. If you deleted 80 obvious screenshots and two long screen recordings, that is a win even if Recents still looks busy. The routine compounds. Session two is easier because you already know where your dense piles live.

If you finished early with energy left, do not “just peek” at 2018 family albums. Bank the win. Extra time is how people start sentimental debates and blow past the stop rule.

Write one line in Notes after each session: date, categories touched, free GB before/after if you emptied trash. That log stops the feeling that cleanup “never works” when you simply forgot you still need to empty Recently Deleted.

Do not start with hard albums

Hard albums are where cleanup becomes journaling. Baby’s first year, a parent’s last visit, a relationship you are still processing. Those deserve a slow night, not a kitchen-timer raid.

Starting there trains your brain to associate cleanup with dread. Starting with screenshots and dud videos trains your brain to associate cleanup with quick wins. You will return more often.

Common mistakes that waste the timer

Opening every photo full screen “just to be sure” turns five minutes of screenshots into fifteen minutes of reading old chats. Trust patterns: expired codes, delivery maps, and meme saves are almost never keepers.

Stopping mid-select to create new albums or rename files is organization, not cleanup. Park that impulse. Likewise, do not jump into Camera settings to redesign how you shoot unless you truly finish the delete pass first.

Selecting an entire month of mixed life photos because multi-select feels powerful is the high-risk move. Stay inside Media Types albums and obvious dud runs. Mixed months need slower tools or a longer session on purpose.

  • No album redesign during the 15 minutes
  • No full-screen reading of chat screenshots
  • No select-all on a sentimental month
  • No emptying Recently Deleted without a 20-second scan

After the timer: trash and measurement

Recheck Settings → General → iPhone Storage. If the number barely moved, open Albums → Utilities → Recently Deleted. Items still count until they expire or you delete them permanently. Empty only if you need space now and the scan looks safe.

If iCloud Photos with Optimize iPhone Storage is on, also glance at iCloud storage. Local free space and library size are related, not identical.

Note what category moved the needle. Next 15-minute session should start with that category again until it is thin, then rotate.

Session variants when the phone is almost full

If iOS is blocking updates or Camera refuses to shoot, reorder the blocks: videos first for pure GB, then screen recordings, then screenshots, then similars only if time remains. Still cap the session at 15 minutes so you do not panic-delete a keeper month.

Empty Recently Deleted in the same sitting after a careful scan when free space is critical. That is the exception to the “wait a few days” preference. Scan for passports, tickets you still need, and kids’ photos before Delete All.

Export one huge keeper video to a computer or Files on another volume only if you have a real backup path ready. Do not spend the whole timer transferring; delete clear trash first, transfer later.

A weekly version of the same idea

Three 15-minute sessions a week beat a quarterly panic. Monday screenshots, Wednesday similars, Friday videos is enough structure for most libraries. Skip a day when life is loud; the point is a low bar, not a streak cult.

After Apple tools feel too slow for similars, a swipe cleaner can replace the middle block with faster decisions. PhotoSwipe is designed for that middle block and is not available yet. Keep using Photos until it is.

Once a month, swap one session for Utilities → Duplicates only. Exact copies are free wins and keep the library from re-accumulating twin imports after a computer sync or chat save binge.

Optional five-minute add-ons

If you ever have a bonus five minutes, run Utilities → Duplicates, clear Safari downloads, or offload one unused app from iPhone Storage recommendations. Stay out of rabbit holes like rebuilding your whole album hierarchy.

Another tight add-on: open Albums → Media Types → Imports if you have that album and wipe failed cable or AirDrop dumps full of black frames. Imports are often pure junk and take under two minutes.

Next step

Set a 15-minute timer now and run screenshots first. When you finish, empty or review Recently Deleted if you need the gigabytes today. For deeper dives on each pile, use the related guides on storage, screenshots, and similars.
