How to delete iCloud photos without deleting the wrong copy

Keep photos in iCloud, keep them only on the iPhone, or remove them from a phone you are selling. The buttons are different.

2026-09-26

Deleting on iPhone usually deletes in iCloud too

If iCloud Photos is on, your iPhone and iCloud are one library. Delete a shot in Photos and it deletes on every device signed into that Apple Account with iCloud Photos. It does not stay safely in the cloud while vanishing from the phone.

That single fact causes most “I deleted photos and they disappeared everywhere” stories. The fix is to pick a direction before you tap Delete. Free space on the phone, free space in iCloud, or remove the library from this device only. Each one uses a different control.

Apple’s wording moves between iOS versions. The paths below match Apple’s support steps as of September 2026, including Settings → [your name] → iCloud → Photos. On older iOS, Optimize iPhone Storage sometimes sits directly under Settings → Photos. If a label differs, search Settings for “iCloud Photos” before you turn anything off.

How to free iPhone storage without deleting the iCloud library

This is the job people describe as “delete from my iPhone but keep in iCloud.” You usually should not delete. You should stop keeping full-size originals on the device.

Open Settings → [your name] → iCloud → Photos and turn on Sync this iPhone if it is off and you want the cloud library. Then open iPhone Storage on that screen (Apple documents this extra tap on iOS 27 and later) and turn on Optimize iPhone Storage. Full-resolution photos and videos stay in iCloud. The phone keeps smaller versions and downloads the original when you open it.

Optimize is not a delete. The photo still exists, still counts toward iCloud storage, and still syncs. Your phone’s free-space number can jump while the iCloud meter barely moves. That is success for this direction, not a bug.

You need enough iCloud space for the originals. If iCloud is already full, Optimize cannot park files that have nowhere to live. Free iCloud quota first, or delete things you truly do not want, using the steps further down.

  • Device space tight, iCloud has room: Optimize iPhone Storage
  • You still want every original on the phone: Download and Keep Originals (uses more device space)
  • You want a specific photo gone everywhere: delete it in Photos, then Recently Deleted if you are sure
  • You want it gone from iCloud and kept only on this phone: turn sync off and download first (next section)

How to delete photos from iCloud and keep them on your iPhone

This is the other search: iCloud is full, the phone has room, and you want the pictures local. Do not start by deleting in the Photos app. With sync on, that delete hits both places.

First, make sure the iPhone has enough free storage for the full library, not the optimized thumbnails. A library that looks small on the phone can be several times larger as originals. Check Settings → General → iPhone Storage before you start. If the phone cannot hold the download, free space or copy keepers to a Mac or an external drive first.

Apple’s current order is: download originals, then turn iCloud Photos off on this device. Go to Settings → [your name] → iCloud → Photos. Turn off Sync this iPhone. When asked, choose Download Photos & Videos. Do not choose Remove from iPhone. Leave the phone on Wi-Fi and power until the download finishes. A big library can take hours or longer. If you turn sync off and walk away mid-download, you can end up with a partial local copy.

After the download, this iPhone has its own copy and stops syncing edits and deletes with your other devices. The pictures are not instantly wiped from iCloud. To remove the iCloud copy and free that quota, Apple’s path is Settings → [your name] → iCloud → Storage → iCloud Photos → Turn Off and Delete Photos. On iOS 17 and earlier the label is Turn Off & Delete from iCloud. Photos and videos stored in iCloud are deleted 30 days after you stop using the service. Download first. If you skip the download, Turn Off and Delete can remove the only full copy.

If you use an iCloud Shared Photo Library, Apple says to deal with that shared library before you turn iCloud Photos off for good. Shared Library storage counts toward the person who created it. Do not assume a family library is “your” private roll.

How to remove photos from this iPhone and keep them in iCloud

Use this when you are selling, giving away, or resetting a phone and the library should remain in iCloud for your other devices. You want the opposite of a download.

Confirm another device or iCloud.com still shows the library before you erase anything. Then Settings → [your name] → iCloud → Photos, turn off Sync this iPhone, and choose Remove from iPhone. That drops the local copies. It does not delete the iCloud library. Optimized leftovers are not originals. If you never downloaded full files to this phone, Remove from iPhone is the right prompt, not Download.

Sign out of the Apple Account before you hand the phone to someone else, and follow Apple’s erase steps for a sale. Turning off photo sync is not a factory reset. A buyer should not open your library.

Recently Deleted, quota, and the 30-day window

Normal deletes go to Recently Deleted for about 30 days. During that window you can recover them in Photos → Albums → Utilities → Recently Deleted. Apple’s storage note says items in Recently Deleted do not count toward iCloud storage. Device storage is the annoying half: they often still count on the iPhone until you empty the album or the 30 days end. If Settings barely moved after a big delete, empty Recently Deleted on purpose. Our empty-Recently-Deleted post is the click-by-click version.

There is a sharp edge. If you are over your iCloud storage limit, Apple says the device may remove deleted photos and videos immediately, with no Recently Deleted recovery. Free a little quota, or export keepers, before an aggressive delete while the cloud is already full.

Emptying Recently Deleted is permanent for those items on every device in the iCloud Photos library. Scan the album. A burst of the wrong kid, or a screenshot of a password you still need, is easy to miss in a Delete All tap.

Shared albums are not the same library

A shared album is a separate pile from your personal library. Apple’s guidance: photos removed from a shared album go away immediately for participants, and people lose access to items they did not save into their own library. Save a copy into your library first if you still want it.

Deleting a photo from your personal library does not always pull it back out of a shared album you already contributed to. Check the album. Do not use a shared family album as the only backup of a trip.

iCloud Backup is a third pile

iCloud Photos and iCloud Backup both say “iCloud” and they are not the same meter entry. With iCloud Photos on, originals live in iCloud Photos. They are not duplicated inside the device backup. With iCloud Photos off, the photo library can sit inside the iPhone backup and make that backup huge.

Turning off Photos inside a backup (Settings → [your name] → iCloud → Storage → Backups, then the device) shrinks the backup. It also means those photos are no longer in that backup. Do that only after you know where the real copies live: on the device, in iCloud Photos, or on a computer.

What not to do

Do not delete half the library “to test iCloud” while sync is on. You will watch the same deletes land on an iPad an hour later. Do not turn off Sync this iPhone and tap through the prompt without reading Download versus Remove. Those two buttons are the whole decision.

Do not trust a screenshot of free space taken mid-download. Wait until Photos finishes, then read Settings → General → iPhone Storage and Settings → [your name] → iCloud again.

Do not pay for a third-party cleaner to solve an iCloud sync question. A swipe app cannot keep one side of an iCloud Photos library and delete the other while sync stays on. Apple’s sync model does not allow that per photo. PhotoSwipe will not pretend otherwise when it ships.

A safe order if iCloud and the phone are both full

Both meters red is the messy case. You cannot download originals (phone is full) and you cannot rely on Optimize (iCloud is full).

  • Export true keepers to a computer or an external drive before you delete. Confirm the files open.
  • On the iPhone, delete low-regret clutter first: Screenshots, screen recordings, obvious duplicate groups.
  • Empty Recently Deleted only for items you have checked, so device space returns.
  • Recheck iCloud quota. If Recently Deleted no longer counts against iCloud, the cloud number may move before the phone does, or the reverse. Read both meters.
  • Once one side has room, choose Optimize (keep cloud, slim the phone) or download-then-turn-off (keep the phone, leave iCloud).

Next step

Open Settings → [your name] → iCloud → Photos and read whether Sync this iPhone is on. If you only need room on the phone, turn on Optimize iPhone Storage and stop. If you need the photos off iCloud, download originals before any “delete from iCloud” button. For the clutter inside the library, start with screenshots and large videos, then bursts.

Common questions

If I delete a photo on my iPhone, does it delete from iCloud?

Yes, when iCloud Photos is on. The delete syncs to iCloud and to other devices on the same Apple Account. Recover it from Recently Deleted for about 30 days, unless your iCloud storage is already over the limit, in which case Apple may remove it immediately.

How do I delete photos from iCloud but keep them on my iPhone?

Download the originals first. Then turn off Sync this iPhone under Settings → [your name] → iCloud → Photos and choose Download Photos & Videos, not Remove from iPhone. To clear the iCloud copy after that, use iCloud Storage → iCloud Photos → Turn Off and Delete Photos. iCloud copies are removed about 30 days after you stop the service. Skip the download and you can lose the only full copy.

How do I free iPhone storage without deleting photos from iCloud?

Turn on Optimize iPhone Storage (Settings → [your name] → iCloud → Photos → iPhone Storage on current iOS). Full originals stay in iCloud. The phone keeps smaller versions. This does not delete anything.

Does Optimize iPhone Storage delete photos?

No. It changes which copy stays on the device. The library still exists in iCloud and still uses iCloud storage.

How do I take photos off a phone I am selling without losing them?

Confirm the library is in iCloud or on another device. Turn off Sync this iPhone and choose Remove from iPhone. Then sign out and erase the phone using Apple’s sell-or-give-away steps. Remove from iPhone is not a factory reset by itself.

Why is iCloud still full after I delete photos?

Check Recently Deleted, shared albums, and whether you are over quota (over-quota deletes may skip the recovery album). Also separate iCloud Photos from iCloud Backup. They are different storage lines. Give sync time on Wi-Fi before you trust the meter.
